Children learn by both example (exemplary learning) and experience (experiential learning) and the habit of using both methods continues throughout adulthood.
We learn "what" to do from the example of others.
Subsequently through trial and error and having a go ourselves we then learn "how" to be most effective in what we do.

Learning is about "what" and "how", but understanding is about "why".
To be truly successful we need not only to be a "what" and a "how" person, we also need to be a "why" person - and we need to be willing to share the "why" with others!
