News from a major European study shows that UK patients who were placed on general wards (instead of critical care wards) after unplanned surgery had a 3.6% chance of dying. In Germany the figure was a very low 2.5% but Latvia and Poland were an extremely concerning 21% and 18% respectively. The patients who died were mainly elderly and the study shows that targeting resources at the most at risk in this age group will further reduce mortality rates.
