Nicole Kidman has opened up candidly and publicly about her battle with depression following her split from Tom Cruise in 2001. The star stated she married far too young, and when it didn’t work out, "I had to really dig deep and find my way through depression. I have no regrets about all of it. It was all part of growing up". (The Daily Mail) Proving that in situations like this, diamonds really aren’t a girl’s best friend, the media reports Kidman agreed to a private financial settlement to avoid an embarrassing and bitter court battle over their estimated £350 million fortune. Their parting was, at least from a spectator’s point of view, amicable and dignified. Kidman stated that ‘every woman who has been through all those ups and downs knows the depression that comes with it.’ (The Daily Mail) For clients, discussing the end of their marriage with a lawyer whilst being heartbroken can be a frightening thought. The reality is it can be a constructive and cathartic experience. A good Family Lawyer recognises when counselling is not only appropriate, but necessary to get clients through what could be their most difficult life experience. Where Relationship Breakdown is inevitable, there is much to be said for managing the Separation with dignity and kindness. A responsible Family Lawyer will not only tell you about the law and procedure, but also how to manage any hostility and ill-feeling constructively. Looking back on her experience, Kidman said she ‘learnt a lot about [herself], that change is not always a bad thing and that sometimes you have to confront things for everyone.’ (The Daily Mail) Moving on after Relationship Breakdown isn’t easy, but should be approached as a change rather than an end. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Nicole subsequently married country singer Keith Urban, and the couple have daughters Sunday Rose, four, and 21-month-old Faith Margaret.
