Whenever new technology appears, people need time and support to use it well. It was true when businesses first adopted Word and Excel, and it is just as true now with artificial intelligence (AI).
Buying the licence is only the beginning. The real value comes when people understand what the tools can do, where they add value, and how to use them responsibly.
I have run training sessions where people were genuinely surprised by Microsoft 365 Copilot. They expected a smarter search engine, but discovered it could help draft content, summarise information, reshape ideas for a specific audience, and explain tricky concepts in plain English. One former colleague even used Copilot to explain complex ideas to him “as though it were speaking to a 7-year-old”.
That is the gap many organisations face: they have invested in AI, but their staff have not been shown how to benefit from it. Without training, people may underuse it, misuse it, or avoid it altogether.
The best AI investment is not just technology: it is people. When employees are given practical guidance, realistic examples, and time to practise, AI becomes part of everyday work rather than another tool gathering dust.
