What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Coaching and mentoring are terms which are often used interchangeably. They are both development approaches based on the use of one-to-one conversations to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge, and work performance. See the table below for some of the key differences.

Coaching

  • Relationship has a limited duration
  • Structured with scheduled meetings
  • Coach doesn’t need experience within coachees role
  • Helps people to discover and fulfil their potential
  • Task orientated focusing on individual specific skills and development
  • Non-directive it is about self-reflection and awareness

Mentoring

  • Ongoing relationship over a period of time
  • More informal and ad-hoc meetings
  • Mentor usually experienced in the mentee position
  • About sharing experience and knowledge
  • Follows a more holistic approach focusing on development of mentee
  • Directive approach - advising and informing

 Consider using coaching when:

  • Delivering significant change in an organisation.
  • Making a transition to a different or more strategic role
  • Developing managerial or interpersonal skills

Consider using mentoring when:

  • Developing talent as part of succession planning
  • To remove barriers that hinder success from minority groups
  • To develop people beyond their current competencies and skills
