Doesn't everyone love trying new things?
Actually, very often we don't.
Especially when those 'new things' are actually changes imposed on us by someone else i.e. the COO or the HR department!
"We didn't ask for things to change so why should we embrace it" is a common sentiment.
This is because the brain is hard-wired to view change as a threat. In addition, your body works to protect you from the change by releasing the hormones for fear - fight, or flight.
That is why so many employees, when presented with a new initiative, even a well-meaning one with lots of potential benefits, will have a negative reaction.
Even if they're outwardly pretending to be positive about it, as is often the case!
This negativity helps nobody and can really slow down adoption of the desired change.
But there is a way forward.
By focusing on three things, we can overcome the psychological costs of change that keep us resistant.
* Firsrly we need to focus on our vision of exactly what a posiitve future looks like.
* Secondly, we need to get clear on why things can't stay as they are - why change has to happen.
* Thirdly, we need to create an action plan to move forward towards a positive future, whilst incorporating the change.
Once the sum of all these three becomes greater than the resistance, we can overcome the barriers to change.
