• Think back to your most recent career success. I’ll guarantee that it had something to do with what seemed like a relatively small detailed decision you made or action you took. 


    Perhaps you stood out from the crowd, you didn’t follow what everyone else was doing, you asked a question in a meeting or at a conference, you complimented a colleague on an innovative contribution. 


    It is inevitably the little things that make the big difference. Stand out from the crowd; be different - here are four tips from my own career for you. 


    1 Don't follow the beaten path: join a small organisation, but one where your contribution is unique. 


    2 Become a big fish in a small pond: go and work in another country for five years. 


    3 Find a mentor and a mastermind group: consult them regularly. 


    4 Never listen to people who say, "I wouldn't do that if I were you!"
