    UX debt.

UX debt affects businesses of all sizes and all industries and sometimes no one really knows (or appreciates) it’s there.

UX debt is the accumulation of design compromises, neglected user research, and delayed usability improvements that accumulate over time. Just like financial debt, UX debt can prevent growth, erode customer satisfaction, and limit a business' competitive advantage.

Here are a few causes of UX debt:

    ▶️ Outdated Design:
Using antiquated designs can lead to user confusion, increased cognitive load, and reduced engagement. These days, customers expect a seamless and intuitive experience. Design is never done.

    ▶️ Inadequate User Research:
Not investing in user research can have pretty dire consequences. Without a deep understanding of users' needs, pain points, and behaviours, you risk designing solutions that miss the mark and actually push away your target market.

    ▶️ Technical Debt:
Yes, more debt! If your product has sluggish performance, frustrating glitches, and security vulnerabilities as a result of not keeping on top of technical maintenance and optimisation, then users are likely to move on. Customer expectations are high, so reliability and performance are key.

    ▶️ Lack of Accessibility:
Overlooking accessibility can exclude a significant portion of your potential audience. Building inclusive experiences is not only the right thing to do but also a strategic advantage that can unlock new markets and drive customer loyalty.

    ▶️ Delayed Usability Improvements:
Postponing usability improvements due to time constraints or budget limitations can create a vicious cycle of mediocrity. Continual iteration and refinement based on user feedback are vital to staying ahead of the competition and maintaining user satisfaction.

Fortunately, it is never too late to tackle UX Debt. Here are some steps to consider in addressing the problem:

1️⃣ Acknowledge that UX debt exists
2️⃣ Record and track the causes and impact of UX Debt
3️⃣ Don’t hide it. Communicate about it with the team, including but not limited to design, development, & senior management
4️⃣ Make plans to address the root causes and how to maintain best practices

If this resonates and you need a hand with any of this, I might know someone…
