What is happening to the world? The global debt crisis has an impact that is felt by communities everywhere. People are wondering alongside their counterparts in Europe what lies ahead for them. In Spain 40% of young people aged 18-25 face unemployment, a quarter of the working population, over 5 million are unemployed. This prevalent fear presses down on us and we try to be strong in the face of adversity. We turn to our old ways of coping to try and resolve our distress…….we may try harder by staying longer at work, saying yes to every request forsaking our own exhaustion in order to please others as perfectly as we can. Or we may bury our heads in the sand and block out our fear by pushing those away that can comfort or reassure us through irritability or avoidance, seeking out our own comfort in compulsive behaviors by doing anything that will distract us from our distress… eating, drinking, shopping or working too much.
You may ask yourself the question…”is life a law of diminishing returns or can there be opportunities to create a new life order?”
Therapy helps people by providing insights into how you currently cope with distress and how these old ways of coping are unhelpfully blocking you exploring new ways of being in the world. By uncovering how a person made sense of their world growing up means that they can reflect on if this same way of making sense satisfies their needs today.
Generally this process for a person is often intriguing, although may be distressing, up and down and fraught with resistance. You will find yourself engaged in a curiosity about what you think, feel and behave like within your relationships, and how various aspects of your life appear to be connected in a way which was not clear to you before.
Counselling and psychotherapy promotes personal insight and change. It is unique to the individual. Insight occurs through the dialog we have together over time. As therapy is so personal to you it is hard to say at the outset how many sessions it will last for. One persons symptom, that may be understood and overcome with new decisions of thoughts, feelings and behaviours, may be another persons resistance which acts to cover up the real issues until challenged and faced in the context of the therapeutic relationship. You will know and feel insight as you begin to feel and think more clearly. You may feel lighter and more optimistic. People often feel more energised and motivated.
